Mark L. Hardy serves as Senior Counsel with the Law Firm of Maire and Deedon in Redding California. Mr. Hardy graduated from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication – Journalism and a French minor. He is also fluent in Tahitian from his 2-year experience living in French Polynesia. While at the U of U, he earned a place on the football team and served a Communications-internship with the Salt Lake Office of Senator Orrin Hatch.
Following a successful first career as the managing employee for a local real estate developer and home builder in Salt Lake, Mr. Hardy moved to Sacramento to attend the University of the Pacific: McGeorge School of Law in the evening while he worked as a Contract Administrator for IBM to support his small family. He graduated and passed the California State Bar in 1988; he also passed the Nevada State Bar in 1996. He has defended and prosecuted numerous civil actions to successful jury verdicts. His successes have included: a $1.25 million binding arbitration award for a plaintiff with a closed head injury; a defense verdict in an action for construction defects against a nationwide window manufacturing company; and, a defense verdict in an action for false arrest and civil rights violations against a northern California grocery store chain. His experience in residential construction and land development affords him unique insight into claims and actions involving Construction, Land Development, Construction Defect, and related concerns.
For 14 years, he has served the Superior Courts throughout Northern California as a court appointed Judicial Referee working in the various capacities of Special Master, Discovery Referee, Mediator, and Arbitrator in “complex” actions involving numerous parties and pleadings, with extensive discovery including site inspections, expert meetings, volumes of documentation, photographs and reports, and an array of competing – sometimes conflicting and intertwined issues with millions of dollars at stake – always with overarching legal concern for insurance coverage.
His participation, on peer recommendation as a “neutral” in the litigation process has provided him the opportunity to preside over, manage, and decide issues that have ranged across Personal Injury and Real Property, through protracted Mold and Construction Defect claims, and into E-Discovery to protect Privacy concerns. He has completed extensive continuing legal education that has included seminars by the Defense Research Institute, by the Negotiation Strategy Institute, and by the respected Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution centered at the Pepperdine School of Law where he earned a certificate in Construction and Construction Defect resolution. He is a member of the Associated Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada. He was a recognized teacher of Advanced Litigation for paralegals at MTI Business College. He has appeared as a panelist and lecturer for the National Business Institute. He is published author and member of The Society of Professional Journalists. He volunteers to serve as Judge Pro-Tem and Settlement Judge to both the State and Federal Courts.
Mr. Hardy’s success in Litigation and in Alternative forms of Dispute Resolution stems from instincts honed by his life’s experience covering 37 happily married years, and two varied and successful careers enhanced by a teacher’s intuition, a reporter’s curiosity, and a grandfather’s compassion.
